Jane Solomon was born on 10 Dec 1838 in Dapto, NSW, Australia, the third of eight children and the second daughter of Mordecai & Elizabeth Solomon.

 

On 09 Dec 1857 at the age 19 she married Mark Myers in Sydney NSW. The son of Lipman Myers and Rebecca Mordecai, he was born in about 1832 in London, England.

 

Over the ensuing years the Sands Directory of Sydney lists him as being a ‘Dealer’ (of earthenware & glass – 1871), firstly in Sussex Street (1858), then Goulburn Street (1861 – 63), while between 1867 & 1868 he ran a ‘Fish & Oyster Saloon’ at 129 South Head Road, Sydney. He is again listed as a Dealer from 1869 through to his death in 1889.

 

Between 1858 and 1870 Mark and Jane Myers had the following children:

 

 

1.                LIPMAN MYERS born in 1858. He died in 1858 (presumably at birth)

 

2.                ELIZABETH MYERS was born on 16 Nov 1859. She died in 1859 (also presumably at birth)

 

3.                REBECCA MYERS was born in 1860 and died in 1861.

 

4.         PHILIP MYERS was born on 23 Aug 1862 in Goulburn St, Sydney, (see Generation 2 for more details)

 

5..        JOSEPH MYERS was born on 05 May 1864 in Goulburn St Sydney ( see Generation 2 for more details)

 

6.         LOUIS MYERS was born in Mar 1869 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. He died on 04 May 1869.  SMH 5 May 1869: May 4th,  "at his parents' residence, 129, South Head Road, Lewis, the beloved and youngest son of Mark and Jane Myers, aged 14 weeks. He was buried in the Rookwood Cemetery, Old Jewish Section (Section A, Row 17 Plot 5/33)

 

7.               SARAH MYERS was born on 06 Mar 1870 in at 129 South Head Road, Sydney. Her mother (Jane) died when she was only seven months old and as her father re-married when she was two, along with her elder brothers Philip and Joseph she was raised in a household which included three younger step-brothers and a step-sister.

As she is mentioned in her father’s death notice, we know that she was definitely alive in 1889 but beyond this there is nothing yet provable about her life, including her supposed death in 1953.

 

JANE MYERS died at the age of 31 on 14 Oct 1870, seven months after the birth of Sarah.  She is buried in Rookwood Cemetery, Old Jewish section, Section A, Row 13. Her headstone reads

 

Sacred to the memory of Jane, the beloved wife of Mark Myers and second daughter of Mr Mordechai Solomon, who departed this life on Friday October 14th AM 5631, aged 31 years.

 

Two years after Jane’s death, on 14 July 1872 Mark Myers married Deborah Solomon (daughter of Emanuel Solomon of London.) They had four children, Annie (born and died 3 July 1873), Hyam (born 24 January 1875 married Edith Magnus died 1 September 1933), Morris (born 54 November 1876) and David (born 9 April 1879)

 

Mark Myers died on 10 Jun 1889. The following funeral announcement was placed in the Sydney Morning Herald by the surviving children of his first marriage : Phillip, Joseph & Sarah

 

MYERS, — June 10, at his residence, 223, Devonshire-street,   Surry Hills, Mark Myers, aged 59 years. Inserted by bis loving children, Phillip, Joseph, and Sarah. Home papers please copy.

 

However, on his headstone the only children mentioned are Phlllip (from his first marriage)  Hyam, Maurice & David (from his second marriage).

4.                                                        PHILIP MYERS was born on 23 Aug 1862 in Goulburn St, Sydney, NSW.

 

He married CELIA LEVY on 14 Dec 1887. She was born in 1859 in Sydney, NSW,

 

Between 1890 and 1927 they lived at various addresses in Surry Hills, Paddington and Waverley, Sydney with Philip’s occupation being listed as a ‘Dealer.’

 

At the time of his death on 02 Sep 1932 their address was 18 Brisbane Street Waverley. He was buried in Rookwood Cemetery Jewish Section (Section 7, Row 15, Plot 353)

 

Celia died on 16 May 1943 in Ryde, NSW, Australia & was buried in the same grave as her husband.

 

Philip Myers and Celia Levy had the following children:

 

 

i.             GODFREY MYERS was born in 1888. He married ROSETTA LEVY (NSW BDM’s 8252/1911).

 

Between 1913 and 1916, the Sands Directories of Sydney & NSW LIST A Godfrey Myers as living at Phillip Street Waverley and by 1917 it had become 47 Phillip Street.

 

Between 1930 and 1958 Godfrey & Rosetta resided at 126 Bundock Street, Coogee. Between 1930 and 1936 his occupation is given as Bookmaker and between 1937 and 1963, Stationer.  Rosetta is listed as Home Duties.

 

By 1963 their address had become 1/116 Carrington Road, Randwick.

 

Godfrey passed away on 26 October 1978 at the age of 90 and is buried in the Rookwood Cemetery Jewish Section (Section 22, Row 23, Plot 955)

 

Rosetta (Rose) died on 25 November 1974 aged 85 and was buried in the same grave as her husband.

 

 

They had the following children:

 

i.                  DULCIE ROSE MYERS was born in Sydney in 1912 She married Woolfe (Chook) Rosen at the Great Synagogue, Sydney on 8 August 1936

 

He died at the age of 36 on 4 October 1947 and is buried in the Rookwood cemetery (Jewish section)

 

 

Dulcie died on 31 August 2007 at the age of 94 years and is buried along with her husband in the Rookwood cemetery (Jewish section)

 

ii.                 DORN MYERS was born in Bondi, Sydney on 17 September 1915.

 

According to the Australian Electoral Rolls, In 1937 she was living with her parents at 126 Bundock Street, Randwick and her occupation was ‘saleswoman.’

At the age of 25, on March 11 1941 she married ERIC GOLDMAN, son of Mr. and Mrs Horace Goldman, of Arncliffe.

     In 1943 they lived at 15 Spring Street Banksia and by 1949 they had moved to 71 Botany Street, Randwick. His occupation is listed as ‘Taxi Driver.’

She died in Randwick, Sydney on 22 April 1979. Eric apparently died in San Antonio, Texas in 1993.

 

 

ii.            JANE MYERS was born in 1890. In 1909 she married ALFRED EDWARD LEVY, the son of Myer & Sarah Levy.  He was born in 1889 in Sydney, NSW, Australia,

 

They had one son, SAMUEL MYER LEVY, who was born in 1910 and died in 1928.

 

Jane was granted a divorce from Alfred in September 1930 on the grounds of ‘desertion’ and she re-married, to Archibald Lane in 1931. She died in 1962 and he in 1977.

 

iii.          MORDECAI (Mark) MYERS was born in 1892 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. In 1915 he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces and was assigned to the Fourth Battalion Infantry 9 – 12 Reinforcements. He was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 19 August 1916.

 

 

iv.          LEON MYERS was born on 02 Jul 1894 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. He married RACHEL PURA, the daughter of Ephraim and Sarah Pura, in Sydney in 1916.

 

Between 1924 and 1980 they lived at various addresses in Randwick, Coogee, Bondi & finally Naremburn, Sydney. During these years he owned a carrying business together with his brother, Joseph and others.

Rachel died on 9 May 1968 and Leon died on 15 June 1983.

 

v.           JOSEPH LAZARUS MYERS was born on 15 Nov 1897 in Arncliffe, Sydney, NSW, Australia.  He married SARA DORA GFOLDMAN on 13 Aug 1924 in Sydney NSW Australia.  Born on 19 April 1901, she was the daughter of Isaac Harris Goldman and Harriet Rolff Blain.

 

         From 1930 to 1963 their address is listed on the Australian Electoral Rolls as 17 Spring Street Arncliffe, Sydney. During these years he owned a carrying business together with his brother, Leon and others.

         He died in Kogarah, NSW on 21 Jul 1971 and was cremated at Woronora Crematorium. Sara died on 10 July 1989 and is buried at Woronora Cemetery.

 

vi.       HANNAH MYERS was born on 14 April 1900 in Surry Hills, Sydney, NSW, Australia. On 12 May 1923 she married JOHN JOSEPH MCKEOWN (b 1898), the son of John Joseph McKeown and Matilda Jane Thorley.

 

They had one son William Mark McKeown (b 1923).

 

Between 1930 and 1944 they lived at various addresses in Bondi (Sydney). On the electoral rolls John’s occupation is listed as ‘Shirt Cutter’ and Hannah’s as ‘Home Duties.’

 

John died in Waverley in 1944 and Hannah continued to live with her son Mark at 33 Barracluff Street Bondi until at least 1963. Mark’s occupation is given as ‘Clerk.’ Mark apparently remained single but between 1958 and 1963 there is a Betty Jane McKeown living at the same address.

 

It is believed that Hannah died in 1985 and Mark in 1986 but as yet we have been unable to confirm these dates.

 

 

5.               JOSEPH MYERS was born on 05 May 1864 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. He married DINAH MAGNUS, the daughter of Abraham Magnus and Leah (Eliza) Campbell on 10 May 1898 in Sydney NSW Australia. She was born in 1865.

 

Joseph died in Sydney on 30 May 1922 and Dinah on 1 July 1949. Both are buried together in The Rookwood Cemetery Jewish section

 

Joseph Myers and Dinah Magnus had one child, MARK MYERS, born in 1901 in Paddington, Sydney, NSW. He married MINNIE BARNETT in 1927 and died Sydney in 1978.
